I have a 3 year old boy and a 5 year old girl and we travel quite a bit. Over the years, I’ve compiled great travel tips and tricks to ease traveling with kids. So, I thought I’d share…
Tips for Flying with Kids
As we all know it’s all about the 20-30 minute increments of distraction to make flying easier. Quite toys and toys that don’t stain, spill or make a mess are key. Here are some of our favorites.
Toy Bag for travel back home – Don’t forget you need to get back home too. I suggest packing a separate “toy bag” in your luggage of all new and fun items he hasn’t seen before for your flight back home.
Then, pack their backpack with all the following goodies. Just make sure they don’t bust into it before the plane or it will take away the element of surprise. I put some items in my bag just to insure this didn’t happen.
Pipe Cleaners – No joke. These things work wonders. Twist around fingers, make shapes… etc.
Colored paint tape – OMG… my kids spent a while taping tape back and forth on their seat arm rests, tray, etc. Plus they balled it up and had sticky fun and you can get plastic cups or plastic silverwear they could decorate with tape.
Reusable Stickers and Boards These are the best!! Super light weight and no mess. Compact boards fold out to amazing scenes where the kids can place and move around reusable stickers.
Enchanted Unicorns (my daughters favorite)
Race Cars (my sons favorite)
Water Wow Activity Book – Color the pages with water and things pop on page. When the water dries the picture goes away. Super fun and no worry of mess. Melissa and Doug have great choices, but there are a ton of places that carry these.
Wind up toys – This is fun for the kids to do and they love all the different things the animals do. I got 3 for the flight over and 3 different ones for the flight home.
Melissa and Doug “Lace and Trace Animals – Keeps them entertained and busy for quite a while.
Imaginetics Forest Friends (they have other themes too) –This comes with a large activity board that folds open and about 30-40 magnet animals to place all over the board.
Magnetic Drawing Board- You can find these easily just about anywhere and they are no mess. However, most iPads now have a drawing feature, so you may not even need to pack this away, but instead just download a cool drawing app (see below).
Lollipops from Trader Joe’s (because they are all natural) – To suck on for their ears on take-off and landing.
Crayons and blank paper
Other flying tips:
- Make sure you bring sanitizing wipes and wipe down all the trays and arm rests and anything else they’ll be eating off of or touching. We’ve seen to many shows on how the planes don’t get thoroughly cleaned after flights.
- Pack a change of clothes for you and a change of clothes for your kids. You never know what may be spilled, thrown up or soiled while flying.
- If there isn’t a lot of room in your seat, we’ve let the kids sleep on the floor. Just ask for a blanket for them to lay on and pillow and they’ll have all the room they’ll need to sleep comfortably.
- Another trick I use is to buy Disposable Pet Waste Bags and a cute dispenser. You know, the kind that is small and dangles from a dogs leash? I put mine right on the outside of my backpack. I use these bags for everything. Wrap up dirty diapers in the airplane, garbage, dirty clothes, etc.
Tips for Staying in Hotel with Kids
If you have a potty trainer, throw a couple of disposable doggy Piddle Pads into your luggage and put under the sheet in their bed.
